Webcrafters Receives Recognition in Green Masters Program

Webcrafters, Inc. is one of a select group of companies to earn the designation of “Green Master,” the highest tier in the Green Masters Program established by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council.  As a Green Master, Webcrafters, Inc. has performed actions in each of the nine sustainability areas and has scored in the top twenty percent of all participating companies.

“It’s inspiring to see an industry leader remain focused on the principles of sustainability,” says Tom Eggert, Executive Director of the WI Sustainable Business Council. “We are proud of Webcrafters, Inc.’s accomplishments over the past two years and congratulate them on achieving recognition as a Green Master in 2012.”

In 2012 Webcrafters invested in a large scale HVAC system controls upgrade throughout the company.  The new control system highlighted the need to decrease temperature variances in the North office, so they expanded the Direct Digital Control (DDC) system to control and monitor an additional 19 Variable Air Volume (VAV) boxes.  Shortly after that they were able to solve the imbalances between the heating and cooling in the different areas.  Webcrafters is now able to control those areas remotely and run the roof top unit more efficiently with decreased maintenance staff time while saving thousands of dollars in electricity and natural gas with increased employee comfort.

Also in 2012 Webcrafters implemented a bindery trim removal system.  In their bookbinding process, books are trimmed to their final size by taking a small amount of trim off every book.  The book trim is pulled to a central location where it is baled for recycling.  The old trim removal system consumed a lot of unnecessary energy.  Webcrafters worked with a Wisconsin vendor to design a new control system which senses what, when, and how much suction is needed at each machine and then only runs the blowers to that level.  This system is fully operational now and is saving Webcrafters upwards of a million Kilowatts of electricity annually.

Applicants to the Green Masters Program are judged on a comprehensive range of sustainability issues, from energy to water use to educational outreach and governance. More than 125 Wisconsin businesses are participating in the program where the top twenty percent achieve the highest “Green Master” designation.  For more information, or a complete list of Green Masters Program participants, go to: http://www.greenmastersprogram.com.
